インターネットに生活空間を持つようになってから
やたらとパスワードが増えた。きっと、それを知っていることで
あたかも私がそこにいるかのように情報変換されるのだろう。

こうしたパスワードは自分で作れる個人情報という意味で
ユニークなものだが、人は一体いくつのパスワードを持って
この情報空間の中で自己定義しているのか。
いろんなお店で買い物をするような人なら
行く先々で異なるパスワードなど覚えているものなのだろうか。

用心深い人ならマイクロソフトのソフトウェアを使って
パスワードリストを作っているかもしれないし、
その上、そのデータが勝手に人に見られたり、複製されたりしないよう
データロックを掛け、またパスワードを打ち込んでいるのだと思える。

大抵の人はエクセルのキーになるようなパスワードも
図書館で本を予約するためのそれも、使い回ししているのではないだろうか。

パスワードは忘れると、大抵メールや郵便を通じて、再発行ができる。
いつでも交換可能な程度の、つまりは忘れてしまう可能性のある程度のものというのが共通の認識だ。
情報空間の中で自己定義するパスワードが、忘れてしまう可能性がまだあるということは、
私たちはまだ、情報化されきってはいないとも言える。

家の鍵や携帯電話、財布、パスポートといったものを忘れることは時々あったが
自分の名前を忘れることは、不思議なことに一度も今の所ない。
ログインに失敗して、自分の名前を忘れてしまったらどんな気分を想像する。

As soon as you create an imaginary being, a character, you are automatically confronted by the question:
What is the self? How can the self be grasped?
It is one of those fundamental questions on which the novel, as novel, is based.
By the various responses to that question,
if you wanted, you could distinguish different tendencies, and perhaps different periods, in the history of the novel.
These may be the same as architecture.
The psychological approach wasn’t even known to the first European storytellers.

Some writer, who live in before modernism, simply tells us about actions and adventures.
Still, behind all those amusing tales, we can make out this conviction:
It is through action
that man steps forth from the repetitive universe of the everyday where each person resembles every other person;
it is through action that he distinguished himself from others and becomes an individual.

Some great writer said as much:
“In any act, the primary intention of the one who acts is to reveal his own image.”
At the outset, action is thus seen as the self-portrait of the one who acts.
Man hopes to reveal his own image through his act, but that image bears no resemblance to him.
The paradoxical nature of action is one of the novel’s great discoveries.
But if the self is not to be grasped through action,
then where and how are we to grasp it?
So the time came when the novel, in its quest for the self, was forced to turn away from the visible world of action and examine instead the invisible interior life.
